چکیده

Absorption lines of have been detected in the spectra of two infrared sources in the Galactic 3 center and also toward the heavily reddened star Cygnus OB2 No. 12, whose line of sight is believed to include only di†use interstellar gas. The absorptions toward the Galactic center sources (IRS 3 and GCS 3-2) probably are due to both in di†use gas and in molecular clouds. The ratios of line equiva3 3 lent width to extinction toward these three sources are much greater than those toward dense clouds where has been detected previously. Analysis of the spectra coupled with a simple model for the 3 abundance of in the di†use interstellar medium implies that the observed is present at low den3 3 sities along long path lengths. These are the Ðrst detections of in the di†use interstellar medium. 3 Subject headings : Galaxy : center È infrared : ISM: lines and bands È ISM: clouds È ISM: molecules È molecular processes È stars : individual (Cygnus OB2 No. 12)

Characteristics of Diffuse X-ray Line Emission within 20 Pc of the Galactic Center

Over the last three years, the Galactic center region has been monitored with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. Besides the X-ray emission from the target object, Sgr A*, diffuse X-ray emission was detected throughout most of the 17 × 17 field of view. With 11 Chandra observations through 2002 June, the total effective exposure reaches ∼590 ks, providing significant photon statistics on much of th...

3.4 Micron Feature on the Shoulder of Ice-band Absorptions in Three Luminous Young Stellar Objects: Iras 18511+0146, Iras 21413+5442, and Iras 04579+4703

An absorption feature at 3.4 lm has been detected in the long-wavelength wing of the 3.1 lm H2O ice feature in three young stellar objects: IRAS 18511+0146, IRAS 21413+5442, and IRAS 04579+4703. The profile of the 3.4 lm absorption in IRAS 18511+0146 has distinct subfeatures at 3.38, 3.41, and 3.48 lm and is not similar to those found in molecular clouds but is similar to those in the diffuse i...

The Diffuse Galactic Gamma-Ray Emission Model for GLAST LAT

Diffuse emission from the Milky Way dominates the γ-ray sky. About 80% of the high-energy luminosity of the Milky Way comes from processes in the interstellar medium. The Galactic diffuse emission traces interactions of energetic particles, primarily protons and electrons, with the interstellar gas and radiation field, thus delivering information about cosmic-ray spectra and interstellar mass i...

Toward understanding the 3 . 4 μ m and 9 . 7 μ m extinction feature variations from the local diffuse interstellar medium to the Galactic center

Observationally, both the 3.4 µm aliphatic hydrocarbon C–H stretching absorption feature and the 9.7 µm amorphous silicate Si–O stretching absorption feature show considerable variations from the local diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) to Galactic center (GC): both the ratio of the visual extinction (A V) to the 9.7 µm Si–O optical depth (∆τ 9.7 µm) and the ratio of A V to the 3.4 µm C–H optica...

Old Isolated Accreting Neutron Stars: The Diffuse X–ray Emission From The Galactic Center

The contribution of weakly–magnetized (B ∼ 10 G) neutron stars accreting the interstellar medium to the diffuse X–ray emission observed in the Galactic Center is investigated. It is shown that, under rather conservative assumptions about the neutron stars and gas distributions, the accretion luminosity can account for a sizable fraction, possibly most, of the detected X–ray flux in the 2.5–7 ke...
